So far from my survival handbook I have learned how to protect myself from a bear, cougar, and shark.

Mr. Pisaniello

Hampton, how do you protect yourself from a shark? This is of interest to me since we live at the beach.

That survival book sounds really good-- I need to find a copy of it!
I've been reading Greenback-- I've been learning a lot about the history of paper money and how it is intertwined with the rest of American history. It's been interesting to see how paper money grew in popularity after being rejected by many people at first. In contrast, most people today are against eliminating the dollar bill and switching to dollar coins. Also, this book contains a lot of information about life in America before the American Revolution. I visited the State Museum in Columbia earlier this week, and it was cool to see many of the same things that are mentioned in this book, such as the layout of early settlements and how people lived. This book also gives a lot of info about the designs on paper money throughout its history.

Another book I read this week was Go Away and Come Back by Joan Abelove. It's about a tribe living in the jungle in Peru. Two women go to live with the tribe and write a book about them. The narrator is a young girl from the tribe who observes the women and tries to help them understand the tribe's culture. It's based on the author's own experiences, and I learned a lot about the culture of such jungle tribes. For example, the two women had to learn that sharing is expected from everyone, and nothing is supposed to be "saved" for later. It should be given to someone to use immediately. They also value girls more than boys because when they get married the boys begin to work for the girls' families (they also marry very young!).

I just finished Elsewhere. I loved this book! Elsewhere is where we go after we die. I wonder about this a lot: what happens when we die. I really liked the book. I reminded me a lot of the movie Defending Your Life with Meryl Streep. I guess I learned that people need to think something happens after death. The book was a wuick read wrapped up in a lot of thought. The best kind!

The thing I learned was that all men cannot be trusted and I also learned that you shouldn't let people put you down about the way your face looks or how you dress because on the inside you are one beautiful person so don't let anyone bring you down.

Well, from reading Sinclair's The Jungle, I've already learned a plethora of information about how we, Americans, treated immigrants, how our food industry operated, and the brutal side of capitalism. Being againt capitalism, somewhat, already I find this tremendously intriguing. It's interesting how Sinclair connects Lithuania's culture to ours at the beginning of the novel and quickly sheds away the thought of the american dream (reminds me a little of Great Gatsby). The way Sinclair exposed how the government had intensely low concern about the health of the public (with a focus on the food industry) shocked me. The way the government did not check every pig carcass for TB and how these little slides eventually grew. I'm sure that we've gotten better as a whole, America I mean, but this gets me wondering "what may be happening today that we don't know about?"

I'm only on chapter 6 of 31 chapters and this book has me hooked and has already reeled me in.
