What is a favorite quote from your reading?

Why did you choose this quote?

What have you learned thus far from reading your text?

Why is this important?

How would you describe the conflict, characters, or the main concept in your text?

Are these characteristics realistic in your opinion?

How is this text similar to anything else you have read?

Does the story remind you of any similar titles?

How would you describe your text?

Who else would be interested in reading your choice?  Why do you think so?

What makes you/made you want to continue reading?

If it is/was a struggle to continue reading, why do you think that is/was?  What are the challenges?

What are you reading?

How did you select this title?  How did you become interested in your text?

Look in a Book

Look in a Book

by Ivy O. Eastwick

Look
in a book
and you will see
words
and magic
and mystery.

Look
in a book
and you will find
sense
and nonsense
of every kind.

Look
in a book
and you will know
all
the things
that can help you grow.

Why read?
Reading is what can change our lives for the better.  We can become the explorers, the heroes, and the dreamers we have yet to become so that we can fight against the injustices that plague us.  Reading is not only entertainment, but a challenge that exercises our brains. Challenging our minds requires us to think and to question the pictures that books create in our minds.  The craft of writing is elegant and powerful, urging us to look within the pages of books to find the undiscovered chapters of ourselves. What would it mean to live in the pages of our books?
We look forward to hearing about your reading and all of the thoughts that can help you grow.

Welcome

Horry County Schools

2008 Summer Reading Initiative – Grades 9-12

Why should students read over the summer?

The purpose of Horry County Schools’ Summer Reading Initiative is to promote a love of reading and to continue developing critical thinking skills. Research shows that students who continue reading throughout the summer experience less academic loss. The Summer Reading Initiative will establish a springboard for reflection and reading celebration in the fall. Summer provides the perfect opportunity to continue to support the development of lifelong reading habits by encouraging our students to read. Reading practice creates not only stronger readers but also lifelong readers.

For complete information regarding Horry County Schools' Summer Reading Initiative talk with your English teacher.
